There is one common denominator for any Isle of Man Golf Tour and that is the fine quality of the beer on the Isle of Man. We have 3 main breweries and they supply Okells, Bushys and Hooded Ram. To be frank, I like them all and the variety in tastes gives a real selection of fine ales for any appreciator of beer.
Okells and Bushy’s are in most pubs and the Okell’s Bitter and Bushy’s Bitter are great session ales. In my opinion, the Hooded Ram beers are a little livelier and rather powerful – refreshing on a hot day.
Amongst some of our favourite drinking houses on the Island is the Victoria Tavern in Douglas. The landlord is ‘old school’ and knows exactly how to keep a great pint and run a bar. Whilst in Castletown, the Glue Pot (Castle Arms) on the harbour is a great spot for an outdoor bevvy with the Castle walls looming and seeping with over a 1000+ years of history. Alongside the railway station is the Sidings Pub and possibly posseses the best selection of real ales on the Island.
Port St Mary has the Albert to showcase some fine ales and regular guest beers, look out for ‘Wobby Bob’ on the bar – a big hitter. The pub is well appointed overlooking the harbour where bobbing boats and yachts more than catch your eye.
In the sunshine, a pint on the beach at the Bay Hotel, Port Erin is a delight. It could be called the ‘home of Bushy’s’ as Martin the owner of the brewery lives above the pub. Following a round of golf in the South, a pint of Bushy’s bitter and a bite to eat at the Bay Hotel always wins.
When out West and playing Peel, the apres golf can turn into a real adventure. Leave your kit at Peel golf club and take a walk down the narrow streets flanked by old fishermans’ cottages and seek out great hostelries such as the White House and the Creek Inn. We always recommend the epic plate of fish and chips at the Marine Hotel on the Promenade.
On your Northern adventure and whilst remarking about your round at Ramsey, the Trafalgar on the Quay is a must. This is a cosy bar that once you are installed, it’s almost impossible to leave.
We offer brewery tours whilst on your Isle of Man Golf Break and Bushys is a firm favourite and just a 4 iron distance (Well hit) from Mount Murray!
